OnePlus has launched its OnePlus Nord 2 5G smartphone, which the company are dubbing “The Flagship Killer”. Indeed, it’s a worthy successor to the excellent original Nord, released last year, with features including MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI chipset, a 50 MP AI triple camera, Warp Charge 65 + 4500mAh battery, 90 Hz fluid AMOLED display.

AI camera system

One of the big upgrades on the Nord 2 has over the original model is the improved camera system. OnePlus has added a a 50 MP AI triple camera system with an aperture of f/1.88, an 8MP ultra-wide camera with an aperture of f/2.25 and a 2MP macro camera with an aperture of f/2.5. It’s powered by a Sony IMX766 sensor and features optical image stabilisation.

Design-wise the Nord 2 isn’t wildly different from the original Nord phone, both 5G phones are solidly build with a pleasing, but not ground breaking design. The Nord 2 has a glass rear for a smooth feel and features a 6.43-inch 1080 x 2400 resolution AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, offering a nice smooth image at the £399 price point. The 5G phone also boasts an in-screen fingerprint scanner.

MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI chipset

The Nord 2 marks the first time OnePlus has used a chip that isn't made by Qualcomm, instead the company worked with MediaTek to exclusively develop the Dimensity 1200-AI for the OnePlus Nord 2 5G as part of MediaTek’s new Dimensity Open Resource Architecture initiative. Features include a fully integrated 5G modem with MediaTek UltraSave 5G technology for big power savings, reliable connectivity with 5G HSR Mode and 5G Elevator Mode and support for 5G carrier aggregation, True Dual 5G SIM and 5G standalone and non-standalone architectures.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI chipset is powered by a 4500mAh battery, along with 65W wired charging, which OnePlus promises gives a full day's power in 15 minutes.

Like the original, the Nord 2 is releasing in Europe and India. In Europe and the UK, prices start at £399 / €399 for its 8GB RAM / 128GB storage model, rising to £469 / €499 for a 12GB RAM / 256GB version. The phone is available in Gray Sierra, Blue Haze in Europe and India gets a Green Wood colour choice, too. UK preorders are open now from OnePlus.com and Amazon with early shipment from today. The 5G phone goes on general sale on July 28th.
